UK restaurant market size: how big is the market? (2026)
The UK restaurant market runs to roughly 85,000 to 90,000 active restaurants, sitting inside a wider hospitality sector of 176,685 accommodation and food services businesses counted by the Office for National Statistics as of March 2025. The structure of the market matters more than the headline number: independents make up the large majority of outlets but run on much thinner margins than the groups, which changes how a vendor should sell into it.

The market in numbers
Full-service restaurants: around 29,000. IBISWorld put UK full-service restaurants at 29,116 in 2025, down 4.4% on the year.
All restaurants: roughly 85,000 to 90,000. Industry estimates put active UK restaurants at about 89,600 in 2025, once quick-service and mobile outlets are added.
Hospitality businesses overall: 176,685, per the ONS, as of March 2025.
Licensed premises in Britain: 99,296, per the licensed trade monitor, a net fall of 572 in the latest year.
Each figure is correct for what it measures. The one that matters depends on the question: total addressable market, or the venues you can actually sell to.
Independents versus groups
The market is not one market. Independents make up around 83 per cent of restaurant outlets but run on 4 to 6 per cent margins, against 10 to 12 per cent for groups. That gap changes the sales motion entirely. A group has a head office, a procurement function and a budget cycle. An independent is the owner, often answering their own phone between service. The same sector, two different businesses to sell into, and the pitch has to be built in the operator's numbers rather than the vendor's.
The cost pressure on operators
April 2025 brought a set of tax and wage changes that added roughly £3.4bn of annual cost to the sector, across wage, National Insurance and business rates. That pressure lands hardest on independents, who have less room to absorb it. For a vendor, every one of those pressures is a reason to buy, if the pitch is framed around the operator's cost base rather than the vendor's feature list.
What the size question is really asking
A founder or a sales leader asking "how big is the UK restaurant market" usually wants to know how many accounts are out there and whether they can reach them. The count answers the first. The second needs venue-level data: which restaurants exist in a given territory, who owns them, and how to reach that owner. That is a different layer from the headline number.
A note on Peach Data
Peach Data provides that layer for the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australia: verified, TPS and CTPS screened records for the owners and decision-makers at restaurants, pubs, cafes and the wider local economy. The company is ICO registered and aligned to UK GDPR. Market sizing tells you the opportunity; venue-level data is what lets a sales team work it.
