A GTM engineer is the person who builds a company's sales and marketing machinery instead of running it by hand. They automate list building, account research, lead routing and outreach, and they connect the tools that do it: the CRM, the enrichment providers, the sequencer and, increasingly, AI agents. Clay, the company that coined the title in 2023, describes the job in one line: "GTM engineers build revenue engines using AI and automation."
This guide covers what the role involves, what the job data says about skills and pay, how it differs from RevOps and SDR roles, and where GTM engineering projects tend to go wrong.
What does a GTM engineer actually do?
Bloomberry analysed a year of GTM engineering job postings (last updated 25 January 2026). The three most common responsibilities were building and automating GTM workflows, integrating GTM tech stack tools, and owning or optimising the CRM.
Clay's own guide to the role, published 21 April 2026, splits the work into three rungs that build on each other:
1/ Data foundation. Keeping CRM and warehouse records clean, deduplicated and trustworthy.
2/ Data modelling. Collecting the data points that predict purchase, expansion or churn, such as ICP attributes and propensity scores.
3/ Data activation. Putting that data to work in outreach, routing, rep alerts and enablement.
The work is not limited to outbound. Clay's guide lists GTM engineering builds across RevOps (replacing manual account research, updating the CRM from call transcripts), growth (demand generation and ABM campaigns) and customer success (spotting churn risk in support tickets).
A concrete example shows the shape of it. A Clay GTM engineer, Sabrina Glaser, used to spend more than 85 minutes researching a single enterprise account before writing an email: about 30 minutes in Salesforce, 30 in Crunchbase, 15 on LinkedIn and 10 on Google. Clay reported on 10 September 2026 that she built four AI agents running in sequence, and now gets the research and a drafted sequence in under five minutes. Clay's GTM ops team then turned her personal setup into a workflow the whole sales team runs.
That last step is the job in miniature. One rep's good idea becomes a system everyone uses.
Is a GTM engineer just RevOps with a new name?
Mostly, according to the data. Bloomberry found that nine of the top ten responsibilities in GTM engineer postings also appeared in RevOps postings. The difference was emphasis. RevOps roles called out forecast accuracy (76% of RevOps postings mentioned it) and led with CRM ownership. GTM engineer roles led with automation and integration, and leaned towards outbound and prospecting.
Some people think the title is pure rebranding. In the Wall Street Journal on 30 September 2026, brand consultant Miranda Shanahan grouped the "go-to-market engineer" with other reworked job titles: "People are motivated to get new labels for jobs that already exist because it makes them seem like they have an edge."
The fair reading is that the work is RevOps work. What changed is how much of it one person can now automate, and how far into outbound it reaches.
How is it different from an SDR or a sales engineer?
An SDR does the prospecting. A GTM engineer builds the system the SDR prospects with. Bloomberry found only 1.4% of GTM engineer and RevOps postings mentioned cold calling as a responsibility. It also found almost no overlap with sales engineering, which is a customer-facing role.
The routes in do cross, though. Bloomberry looked at 100 LinkedIn profiles of working GTM engineers and found the most common path started in an SDR or BDR seat: someone frustrated by manual prospecting and bad data who learned the tools to fix it.
What skills does a GTM engineer need?
From Bloomberry's posting analysis:
1/ Code, at least some. SQL and Python each appeared in 38% of GTM engineer postings.
2/ Clay. It was the most requested tool in postings and appeared in more than 90% of the GTM engineer profiles reviewed.
3/ A CRM. HubSpot appeared in 52% of postings and Salesforce in 45%.
4/ Sequencing and automation. Outreach appeared in 49%, Zapier in 39%, Apollo in 29% and n8n in 28%.
The average experience asked for was 4.11 years. The skill the postings cannot list is commercial judgement: knowing which bottleneck is worth automating first.
How much does a GTM engineer earn?
Bloomberry put the median advertised salary at $127,500, based on postings that published a range. The highest-paying employers in its sample were Vercel at $252,000 and OpenAI at $250,000. The data is weighted towards US job postings. We have not found a published UK or European salary benchmark for the role that we would stand behind, so treat any local figure you see quoted with care and check the sample behind it.
How fast is the role growing?
Bloomberry counted a 205% increase in GTM engineering job postings for January to September 2025 against the same months of 2024. Clay's own estimates have moved quickly too: its April 2026 guide said about 100 GTM engineer listings went live each month, and a June 2026 post by chief executive Kareem Amin said "hundreds". Both come from the company with the most to gain from the role taking off, so read them as direction rather than measurement.
The money behind the role is easier to verify. Clay announced a $115 million Series D at a $7.1 billion valuation on 9 September 2026, citing 4x revenue growth in 2025.
Where does GTM engineering go wrong?
Usually at the bottom of the stack. In his June 2026 post, Amin wrote: "Everything in a GTM engineering system depends on building a strong data foundation: without it, nothing downstream will work." Clay's April guide says most companies "stumble on the first rung", either running campaigns on incomplete or duplicate-riddled data, or spending 80% of their time on data hygiene and 20% on strategy.
Even well-run teams find errors once they look. Clay reported on 21 October 2026 that a nightly agent review of one of its own lead routing workflows found 47 of 159 leads in a segment that did not match their company size, roughly 30%.
Agents raise the stakes. "The agents don't run the same way twice, so a person has to babysit every step, and you get maybe a 20% improvement," Derek Osgood, co-founder of DoubleO.ai, said when ZoomInfo announced it had acquired the company on 30 September 2026. The teams getting results keep a human approving changes before they reach live workflows.
The short answer
A GTM engineer automates the work between a target list and a booked meeting, and increasingly the work after it too. The role is real and the demand is real. Most of what makes one good is unglamorous: clean data, correct segmentation, sensible rules about who you contact, and a review step before anything ships.
